EMDR
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a structured, evidence-based therapy that helps the brain process distressing memories that are intruding on daily life. Using bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements, self tapping or art materials, it prompts memory processing and reduces the emotional intensity that difficult experiences can hold. It is not necessary to talk through events in detail for it to work, which can make it feel more manageable when words alone haven't been enough. Sessions are always supported to remain at a pace that feels safe and tolerable. EMDR is recommended by NICE for the treatment of PTSD, and is delivered by Amy as an EMDR therapist registered with EMDRIA.

Why seek EMDR?
EMDR may be a particularly suitable tool to use in the following circumstances:
Perinatal Mental Health:
-
A traumatic birth experience that continues to affect you emotionally or physically
-
Reprocessing earlier life experiences (such as difficult relationships with caregivers) that have resurfaced or intensified since becoming a parent
Trauma:
-
A desire to process past experiences without needing to talk through them in detail
-
A single distressing event (an accident, medical trauma, assault) that hasn't resolved with time
-
A specific memory or event that continues to feel distressing, vivid, or "stuck", even after talking about it
-
Flashbacks, intrusive thoughts, or nightmares related to a past experience
-
Feeling triggered by reminders (people, places, situations) connected to a difficult event
-
Anxiety, hypervigilance, or a sense of being "on edge" that traces back to a specific experience

What to expect:
Your first session(s) will focus on getting to know you, understanding your history, and identifying which memories or experiences you want to work on.
-
Before any reprocessing begins, time is spent building a sense of safety and stability, including grounding and self-soothing techniques you can use both in and outside of sessions
-
During reprocessing, you'll bring a specific memory to mind while following a form of bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements, tapping or the use of art materials), while your therapist checks in with you throughout
-
You may notice thoughts, feelings, images, or body sensations shifting during this process; this is a normal part of the brain reprocessing the memory
-
Sessions end with time to settle and ground you before you leave
-
The pace is led by you, some memories process more quickly than others, and there is no pressure to reach a particular outcome within a certain time limit
